If you’ve ever wondered whether UPF is the same as SPF, you’re not alone. While both protect against the sun, SPF and UPF work in very different ways.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
Designed for sunscreen and lotions and primarily measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. SPF is time-based and wears off, meaning it must be reapplied every two hours (or sooner if you’re swimming or sweating). Unless labeled broad-spectrum, most SPF products do not fully protect against UVA rays, which are responsible for premature aging.
